Our story
We have been sourcing products from factories across Asia for more than 25 years. In recent years we have focused more and more on certified, organic and lower-carbon products, made to high standards by factories we work with directly.
Vietnam is a natural home for solid timber products. Its furniture factories supply the most famous flat-pack global furniture brands, FSC-certified plantations provide managed timber, and many factories are certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
When we found a plain, solid pine flat-pack coffin, we could see how well it suited Australian funeral directors and natural burial grounds. It stores flat in one compact carton, goes together in about 30 minutes and ships far more efficiently than a pre-assembled one. So we have it made in Vietnam and supply it direct from the factory: affordable, high quality, with efficient logistics.
Why flat-pack
A coffin that stores flat takes a fraction of the space of an assembled one and stays new until it is needed. It assembles with a mallet and wooden dowels, so a funeral home can keep stock without keeping floor space.
Less freight, less packaging
- Less space. A flat-packed coffin needs far less space than a pre-assembled coffin of the same size.
- Less packaging. Each flat-packed coffin needs less packaging material than a pre-assembled one.
- Lower freight and packaging emissions. We will publish measured figures once the sample carton is measured.

Rod Smith leads Nestwood Coffins. He is an Australian with more than 25 years of experience sourcing products from factories across Asia, and a passion for ethical, certified green products. He leads a team in Vietnam that inspects production and manages shipping to Australia.
